Dogtooth

Dogtooth is a very original and rather disturbing film for its viewers. Yorgos Lanthimos, the director, holds the viewers attention from start to finish. This film was the Greek director’s first milestone, followed by The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Lanthimos delves into weirdly complex themes that make us think.

Dogtooth was voted the Best Film in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. This film takes us to an alternative reality, to a world different from what we are accustomed to. It portrays a couple whose three children have never left their house, raised apart from the rest of the world, until they grow up to a point where they have questions that simply cannot be answered in their domestic environment. In this world, the children, who are actually adults in their early twenties, are manipulated by their parents and confined to their house, with an entirely distorted understanding of the outside world. Only their father is allowed to leave the house. He tells them that he can’t go outside without the protection of a car, because the outside world is a dangerous place. As for the children, they can only leave the house if one of their canines falls out (which is impossible unless forced).

This couple forces their children to live in complete ignorance, being completely manipulated by their parents’ education. These super controlling restrictions based on moral values result in violent behaviour, attempts to escape and impulsive actions and attitudes.

The way this film tries to show a happy family is scary and also very peculiar. It may not appeal to everyone, considering the psychological intensity and the disturbing and weird scenes that take place throughout the story.

The most intriguing scene for me, and probably for many other viewers, was the last one (SPOILER). We don’t know what happened to the older sister. After she extracts her canine tooth and locks herself in the boot of the car, her family tries to find her, but their efforts are in vain. The next day, the father goes to work, and the film ends by focusing on the back of the car. Did the sister manage to escape, or did she die suffocated? And that’s how Dogtooth ends, a psychological horror film with drama and suspense.

Canino é um filme muito original e um tanto perturbador para os seus espectadores. Yorgos Lanthimos, o seu realizador, prende a atenção do espectador do início ao fim. Este filme marca o primeiro grande passo do cineasta grego que, em seguida, realizou A Lagosta e O Sacrifício de um Cervo Sagrado. Os temas de Lanthimos são estranhamente complexos e trazem um sentido de reflexão.

O Canino foi eleito, em 2009, no Festival de Cannes, o melhor filme da mostra Un Certain Regard. Este filme nos leva a uma realidade alternativa, a um mundo diferente do que estamos acostumados. Nele retrata os três filhos de um casal que nunca passaram dos limites da propriedade, sendo criados apartados do resto do mundo, até que chegam a um momento em que o crescimento lhes impõe questões que não podem ser resolvidas apenas no seio doméstico. Nesse mundo, as crianças, que, na verdade, são adultos nos seus 20 e poucos anos, são manipuladas pelos pais que os fazem viver confinados dentro de casa com um conhecimento sobre o mundo exterior completamente distorcido, apenas o pai pode sair de casa e conta que não pode andar na rua sem a proteção de um automóvel, pois o mundo exterior seria um lugar perigoso. As crianças, por sua vez, só poderiam sair de casa se um dos caninos caísse (o que se torna impossível de acontecer, a menos que seja forçado). Este casal faz com que os filhos vivam em total ignorância, sendo completamente manipulados com ensinamentos que os seus progenitores lhes proporcionam. Essas restrições cheias de valores morais super controladoras resultam de comportamentos violentos, tentativas de fuga e ações e atitudes impulsivas.

A forma que este filme tenta mostrar uma família feliz é assustadora e também muito curiosa. Ele pode não ser do agrado de muitas pessoas, tendo em conta a carga psicológica e as cenas perturbadoras e estranhas que acontecem ao longo da trama.

A cena que mais me intrigou, e acredito que também a muitos espectadores, foi a final (SPOILER). Não se sabe o que aconteceu com a irmã mais velha. Depois de ela ter arrancado o canino e trancado-se no porta-bagagens, é procurada pela família e não adianta de nada. O pai vai trabalhar no dia seguinte, e o filme acaba com o foco na traseira do carro.Será que a irmã conseguiu escapar ou morreu por falta de ar? Assim se encerra Canino, um filme de terror psicológico, drama e suspense.
